Although this is the "factory authorized" hood bird color guide we in the Trans Am hobby have all witnessed original non-restored Trans Ams with hood bird/decal color & paint color combinations differing from those listed on this page. Some vehicles were special ordered and factory equipped with other decal color combinations than shown below. This listing is for the original equipment (OEM) GM hood birds only and does not include the multi-piece, non-factory special edition, hood birds that are sold in the aftermarket. When necessary, I have substituted other year noses/hood bird photos until that specific color combination is available to me in the exact year to photograph and update this page. I have attempted not to switch the hood-bird styles when that specific body color & hood bird style and color combination is not available. There are many aftermarket hood birds that upon close inspection are not the same design as the OEM hood birds and were NEVER offered by Pontiac on the Trans Am .

Ex : 1973-78 hood bird head facing the wrong direction, etc. The correct direction is: beak & mouth flame towards drivers side front fender. Exception to the rule: The 1978 Y-88 Gold Special Edition Trans Am utilized the 1979 Y-84 Black Special Edition hood bird; it's beak & mouth flame are towards the passenger side front fender and has a much broader wing fan.
